Chovva dosham for marriage, Kerala rasi chart showing Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses

Your family's astrologer looks at the jathakam, pauses, and says "chovva undu." The room goes quiet. Proposals that looked perfect suddenly get parked.

We've seen this play out thousands of times since 2011. Most of that panic comes from half the rule. So let's walk through the whole thing: what chovva dosham is, how it's checked, when it's cancelled, and how it's matched in porutham.

What is chovva dosham?

Chovva is the Malayalam name for Mars. Tamil calls it chevvai or sevvai, Sanskrit texts say kuja, and North India says mangal. So chovva dosham, chevvai dosham, kuja dosha and manglik dosha all point to the same idea.

The rule is simple. If Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your birth chart, the chart is said to carry chovva dosham. Mars is a fiery, aggressive graha. Astrologers believe that in these houses it disturbs family life, married harmony and, in the harshest reading, the partner's longevity.

A chart without chovva or other papa grahas in these houses is often called a sudha jathakam (clean chart). One with it is loosely called a papa jathakam in Kerala.

Which houses cause it and what each one means

Each house talks about a different part of life, so chovva hits each one differently.

Chovva dosham houses in a Kerala rasi chart, example with Medam lagna Meenam 12 Medam 1 LAGNA Edavam 2 Mithunam 3 Karkidakam 4 Chingam 5 Kanni 6 Thulam 7 Vrischikam 8 Dhanu 9 Makaram 10 Kumbham 11 Chovva Dosham Shaded = dosha houses (example: Medam lagna)
Houses counted from lagna. The same count is repeated from the Moon (Chandra) and Venus (Shukra).
HouseArea of lifeWhat astrologers say chovva does here
1st (Lagna)Body, health, temperamentShort temper, health strain, friction with the spouse.
2ndFamily, speech, wealthHarsh words at home, less family happiness. Its 7th aspect falls on the 8th house.
4thHome, mother, comfortA restless home atmosphere. It also aspects the 10th (career) and 11th (gains).
7thSpouse, marriageDelayed marriage, loss of trust between partners. The most talked-about position.
8thLongevity, mangalya sthanamFor a woman, the 8th is the mangalya (marital thread) house, so this is treated as the heaviest.
12thBed comforts, expensesLess comfort in married life, living away from home, rising expenses.

One line most people skip: a strong Mars, or one joined or aspected by benefics, gives good results instead. A dosha house alone doesn't settle anything.

How chovva dosham is checked in Kerala

Kerala astrologers don't look from one point. They check from three:

  • From Lagna: the rising sign at birth.
  • From Chandra: the rasi where your Moon sits (your janma rasi).
  • From Shukra: Venus, the karaka of marriage.

Texts don't fully agree on which of the three weighs the most. Many Kerala practitioners treat lagna as primary; some sources say chovva counted from Shukra is the harshest. That's exactly why two astrologers can give you two different answers.

In practice it's graded. Chovva in the 7th or 8th is treated as strong. In the 2nd, 4th or 12th it's usually milder. In the 1st it's somewhere in between.

When chovva dosham gets cancelled

Here's the part that saves a lot of proposals. Classical texts list many situations where Mars sits in a dosha house but the dosham doesn't apply. These are the ones you'll hear most often:

1. Sign-based exceptions for each house

Chovva inNo dosham if that house is
2nd houseMithunam or Kanni
4th houseMedam or Vrischikam
7th houseMakaram or Karkidakam
8th houseDhanu or Meenam
12th houseEdavam or Thulam

This is the widely quoted version. A few Kerala texts swap one or two signs, so treat it as a guide, not gospel.

2. Mars is strong by sign

  • Chovva in its own signs, Medam or Vrischikam.
  • Chovva exalted in Makaram.
  • Several sources add Chovva in Chingam or Kumbham.

3. Lagna makes Mars a friend

For Karkidakam and Chingam lagna, Mars rules a kendra and a trikona at once, which makes it a yogakaraka. Many astrologers don't count chovva dosham at all for these lagnas. Some extend the same relief to Dhanu and Meenam lagna.

4. Benefics step in

  • Guru (Jupiter) joins Mars or aspects it.
  • Mars joins or is aspected by the Moon or Mercury.
  • Chandra and Chovva in the same rasi (Chandra Mangala yoga).
  • Strong Guru or Shukra in the lagna or 7th.

5. The partner's chart balances it

If the other person's chart has a similar chovva, or Shani, Rahu or Surya in those same houses, the dosham is considered balanced. That's dosha samyam, and it's the next section.

Chovva dosha samyam: how matching really works

In Kerala porutham, you don't just ask "does she have chovva?" You compare both charts together. A papa (malefic) score is counted for the bride and the groom. This is papasamyam. Chovva carries the biggest weight in that count, with Shani, Surya and Rahu adding their own share.

  • Both have chovva dosham → it cancels out. Usually fine.
  • Neither has it → no issue.
  • Only one has it, uncancelled → this is the case families worry about.
  • One has it, but it's cancelled → most astrologers treat it as no dosham.

The traditional preference is that the groom's papa score is equal to or a little higher than the bride's. A big gap the other way is what gets flagged.

Chovva in the 7th or 8th: what should the partner have?

This one comes up constantly. Short answer: the partner doesn't need Mars in the exact same house. What matters is a comparable strength of dosham.

Since the 7th and 8th are both treated as strong positions, most astrologers are happy to match an 8th-house chovva with a 7th- or 8th-house chovva in the other chart. A mild 2nd- or 12th-house chovva against a strong 8th-house one is where they hesitate.

Some traditional astrologers prefer that a girl with 8th-house chovva marries a boy with chovva in the 7th or 8th specifically. It's a preference, not a universal rule, and the full papasamyam total still decides the final call.

Chovva dosham remedies (pariharam)

Families who follow tradition usually do a pariharam before the wedding, even when the dosham is mild. These are the common ones.

Followed in Kerala

  • Subrahmanya worship: Murugan is the deity linked with Mars. Tuesday visits to a Subrahmanya temple are the most common advice.
  • Chovvazhcha vratham: fasting on Tuesdays, often for a fixed number of weeks.
  • Shashti vratham, especially Skanda Shashti.
  • Offering red flowers and thuvara (red gram) at the temple.
  • Worship of Bhadrakali or Hanuman, depending on family custom.

Followed in Tamil Nadu

  • Vaitheeswaran Koil near Mayiladuthurai is the Angaraka (Mars) sthalam. Chevvai dosham pariharam here is done on Tuesdays.
  • Tuesday Murugan temple visits for seven weeks, donating red gram on the last week.
  • Women often wear red and pray to Amman in the morning and Murugan in the evening.

Followed elsewhere

In North India, a kumbh vivah (a symbolic marriage to a banana tree, peepal tree or a Vishnu idol) is performed by a manglik before the real wedding. It's rarely done in Kerala.

A sensible way to look at it

Chovva dosham isn't a verdict on anyone's character or future. It's one factor among many in a jathakam, and a large share of charts that "have chovva" turn out to be cancelled once the full rules are applied.

Plenty of couples marry without matching chovva and live happily. Plenty of families prefer to follow the rule. Both are fine. What isn't fine is dropping a good proposal on the strength of half a rule.

So get the full chart checked, see if a cancellation applies, look at papasamyam for both. Then decide together.

Frequently asked questions

Is chovva dosham the same as chevvai dosham and manglik dosha?+

Yes. Chovva (Malayalam), chevvai or sevvai (Tamil), kuja (Sanskrit/Telugu) and mangal (Hindi) all mean Mars. The house rules are the same; regional traditions differ a little on cancellations.

Which houses cause chovva dosham?+

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from lagna, from the Moon and from Venus. The 7th and 8th are treated as the strongest.

Can a person with chovva dosham marry someone without it?+

If the dosham is cancelled by a classical exception, most astrologers say yes. If it's uncancelled and strong, traditional matching prefers a partner with a comparable dosham so papasamyam balances.

Does chovva dosham go away after a certain age?+

You'll often hear that it weakens after 28 or 30. That's a popular belief, not a rule found consistently in classical texts, so don't rely on it alone.

Is chovva dosham more serious for women?+

Traditionally, yes, because the 8th house is read as the mangalya sthanam for a woman. In matching, though, both charts are scored the same way through papasamyam.
